Pay on Delivery in Kampala: How the 20% Deposit Works

Most of our Kampala orders are paid at the door. Here is exactly how it works, including the part people ask about most: the deposit.

The short version

  1. At checkout choose Pay on delivery.
  2. Pay 20% of the order by MTN or Airtel Money to confirm it. On a UGX 50,000 order that is UGX 10,000.
  3. We pack it in a plain parcel and a rider brings it, usually within 1 to 3 days in Kampala.
  4. The rider calls before arriving. You pay the remaining 80% in cash or by Mobile Money when the parcel is in your hands.

Why the deposit

Before the deposit, one in three pay-on-delivery orders was never collected: the rider crossed town, called, and nobody answered. The deposit is small enough not to be a risk for you and large enough that orders placed are orders meant. It also means the rider is not carrying your full payment across Kampala.

What if you change your mind

Before the parcel leaves us: message us and the deposit comes back to your Mobile Money the same day. After the rider is on the way: the deposit covers the rider's trip and is not refunded. If what arrives is wrong or damaged, everything is refunded, deposit included, under the returns policy: tell us within 7 days of delivery.

What the rider sees

A plain box or bag, your name and phone, and the amount to collect. Not what is inside, not the store name. The receipt in the parcel shows the amount and an order number only. Messages you receive say an order is on its way and when; they never name a product.

Outside Kampala

Pay on delivery is Kampala Metro only, because that is where our own riders go. For Wakiso, Mukono, Jinja, Mbarara and the rest of the country, pay in full by Mobile Money or card and the parcel goes by courier in 3 to 7 days. The full district-by-district rate card is here.

Other ways to pay

MTN MoMo and Airtel Money in full, Visa and Mastercard, PayPal for anyone paying from abroad, and layaway from UGX 7,500 a week if you would rather pay little by little. Every one of them delivers in the same plain parcel.
