Bondage for Beginners: A Safe, Simple Start for Couples

Being blindfolded, or having your hands held, is one of the most common things couples want to try. It does not need heavy gear. It needs trust, a clear way to stop, and a few soft, simple things.

The three rules before anything else

  1. Talk first, not during. Agree what you will try, what is off-limits, and who is in control. Keep it small the first time.
  2. Use a stop word. Pick a word you would never say by accident, like "red". When it is said, everything stops, no questions. If a mouth will be covered, agree a signal instead, such as dropping something held in the hand.
  3. Never leave a restrained person alone, not even for a minute.

What to start with

Most of the bondage shelf is imported, so allow 3 to 8 weeks for delivery; the product page shows the date before you pay.

What to avoid at the start

  • Metal handcuffs. They tighten, bruise wrists and can trap a nerve. Padded cuffs do the same job safely.
  • Rope until you have learned knots that release quickly. Keep safety scissors nearby whenever rope is used.
  • Anything around the neck. Never, for any reason.
  • Alcohol or anything that clouds judgement for the person in control.

Checking circulation

You should be able to slide a finger between the cuff and the skin. Every few minutes, check that hands and feet are warm and the right colour, and ask about tingling or numbness. Cold, pale, blue or numb means release straight away. Twenty minutes in one position is plenty the first time.

Afterwards

Take a few minutes together: water, a blanket, talk about what you liked and what you did not. It is how the next time gets better. Wipe cuffs and blindfolds with mild soap and let them dry; each partner should have their own blindfold if you share with no one else, simply for hygiene.
