Rosemary oil is the most asked-about hair product in our WhatsApp inbox, and the most misunderstood. Here is what it does, what it costs, and how to use it so it actually works.
What it does, and what it does not
In a 2015 trial, rosemary oil matched 2% minoxidil for hair count after six months, with less scalp itching. That is the good news. The catch is the timescale: six months, applied consistently. It will not regrow a hairline in three weeks, and anything that promises that is not rosemary oil.
It works by improving circulation to the follicle and calming the scalp. It helps most with thinning edges, slow growth after braids, and a scalp that flakes or itches. It does not help with hair that has fallen out from a medical cause without treating that cause too.
Price in Uganda
A 30 to 60 ml bottle of real rosemary oil, already diluted in a carrier so it is ready to apply, sells for UGX 30,000 to 45,000 in Kampala. Ours is UGX 35,000. Anything under UGX 15,000 for a large bottle is usually fragrance oil, which smells right and does nothing. Pure essential rosemary oil in a tiny 10 ml bottle is a different product: it must be diluted before it touches skin.
How to use it
- Two or three times a week, on a clean or day-old scalp. Daily is not better; it just runs out faster.
- Part the hair and apply to the scalp, not the lengths. A dropper or the nozzle straight onto the parting, then massage for two minutes with fingertips. The massage matters as much as the oil.
- Leave it in. Overnight under a bonnet is ideal. If you wash it out, leave at least an hour.
- Patch test first behind the ear for a day if your skin reacts easily.
The honest timeline
Weeks one to four: less itching, less flaking, hair feels softer. Weeks four to twelve: less shedding on the comb. Three to six months: visible baby hairs at the edges and a fuller parting. Take a photo of your hairline in good light on day one; memory is a poor judge of slow change.
What to pair it with
Rosemary oil does the scalp; it does not moisturise the hair. Pair it with a light leave-in or a hair mask on wash day, and go easy on tight styles while the edges recover. If your main problem is dryness rather than growth, start with the rosemary, batana and rice water comparison.
Everything in the hair care range is delivered across Uganda in a plain parcel, from UGX 10,000 in Kampala, and you can pay the rider at the door.
