Bringing a Toy Into a Relationship: How to Ask, What to Start With

The fear is always the same on both sides: "does this mean I am not enough". Here is how couples we talk to get past that sentence, and what they buy once they do.

The sentence

Not "I want to try a toy". Try: "I read something about couples using a toy together, and I was curious what you would think." It asks a question instead of announcing a decision, it puts the toy on the "together" side, and it gives the other person room to say "tell me more" or "not yet" without a fight. Have it somewhere neutral, not in bed, not after a disappointment.

If the answer is "not yet"

Leave it. Bring it up again in a month, differently: show them a product page, or this article. Many people say no to the idea and yes to a specific thing once they can see it is small, quiet and not intimidating. Nobody should be argued into it.

What is built for two

  • A remote or app-controlled vibrator. One person wears it, the other holds the control. It hands the initiative to the partner who was worried about being replaced. The app-controlled bullet is the usual first choice.
  • A small external vibrator used during sex. No replacement of anything; an addition that makes the existing thing work better for her. The slim massage stick or a bullet.
  • Massage oil and a good lubricant. Not a toy at all, and the most common thing couples add first. See the sets; the For Us set pairs them.
  • Soft restraints or a blindfold. For couples who like the idea of play more than the idea of a motor. The soft cuffs have a quick release.

What to avoid first

Anything large, anything realistic in shape, and anything marketed as a substitute. First toys for couples should be additions, small and quiet, so that the first experience is "that was fun" rather than "that was a lot".

The practical bit

Order it together, or order it as a gift with a message so it arrives as a shared thing. The parcel is plain, nothing on the receipt names it, and the first-toy guide covers the material and size questions once you have said yes.
