Body-Safe Materials: What You Need to Know Before You Buy

When you're shopping for intimate wellness products, the single most important thing on the label isn't the brand, the colour, or the features — it's the material. Your body absorbs what it touches, and intimate skin is the most absorbent skin you have. Here's what to look for, what to avoid, and how to tell the difference.

The Gold Standard: Medical-Grade Silicone Medical-grade (or "platinum-cured") silicone is the material most recommended by health professionals. It's non-porous , which means bacteria can't settle into microscopic holes the way they do with cheaper materials. It's hypoallergenic, easy to clean with warm water and mild soap, and it holds up for years without breaking down.

A quick test when a product arrives: pure silicone has no smell. If a product has a strong chemical or "new plastic" odour that doesn't fade after washing, that's a warning sign it may be a blend rather than pure silicone.

Also Safe: ABS Plastic, Glass, and Stainless Steel ABS plastic — a hard, non-porous plastic used in many quality products. Completely body-safe, lightweight, and easy to clean. Borosilicate glass — the same material as laboratory glassware. Non-porous, temperature-resistant, and far stronger than it looks. Stainless steel — non-porous, durable, and completely inert. Materials to Avoid These materials are still sold widely — especially in unregulated marketplaces — and are worth actively avoiding:

Jelly rubber and PVC — soft, cheap, and often contains phthalates: chemical softeners that several health agencies have restricted in children's toys but which remain unregulated in adult products in many countries. Jelly materials are also porous, meaning they can never be fully sterilised. TPE/TPR blends of unknown quality — thermoplastic elastomers range from acceptable to poor. They're porous, so even good TPE should be treated as a shorter-life product and never shared without a barrier. Anything unlabelled — if a seller can't tell you what a product is made of, that silence is your answer.

How to Check What You're Buying Read the product description for the specific material name — "medical-grade silicone", "ABS", "borosilicate glass". Vague words like "soft touch material" or "rubber" are red flags. Check the price against the category. Pure silicone costs more to produce; a large silicone product at a suspiciously tiny price usually isn't silicone. Look for products with no strong smell, sealed packaging, and a named manufacturer.
