Water-based is the safe default: it works with latex condoms and with silicone toys, rinses off easily, and rarely irritates. The trade-off is that it dries a little faster, so you may re-apply.
Silicone-based lasts far longer and is great in water — but it degrades silicone toys, so keep the two apart. It's condom-safe.
Flavoured lubricants are water-based with added taste for oral play. Look for sugar-free where you can.
Massage oils give the longest, most sensual glide, but oils are not condom-safe — switch to water-based for protected sex.
